Marriott Bonvoy’s new “Where Gameday Checks In” campaign spotlights pregame rituals at its hotels, timed to March Madness and building toward the FIFA World Cup.
Marriott Bonvoy is making the case that the hotel room is as much a part of the sporting experience as the arena. The hospitality chain launched “Where Gameday Checks In” this week, a marketing campaign built around the pregame rituals, pep talks and poolside practice sessions that athletes engage in when traveling for competition.
The campaign, developed with agency Wieden+Kennedy New York and directed by the filmmaking duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris — best known for “Little Miss Sunshine” — was shot at real Marriott Bonvoy properties across the country. It features a roster of real-world athletes and coaches, and is timed to capitalize on two major sporting events: the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament and, later in the year, the FIFA World Cup.
“Our new campaign is rooted in a simple truth: the moments that happen around the game are often the ones that stay with us,” said Mandy Gill, managing vice president for brands, marketing and digital at Marriott International U.S. and Canada. “Both sports and travel have an impact on shaping who we become, and Marriott Bonvoy elevates the experience of being there.”
Inside the Ads
The centerpiece spot, “The Biggest Pep Talk,” opens with University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma delivering an inspirational speech to his team, then cuts to University of Texas football players doing the same in a hotel room. The ad also features the University of Oregon’s Duck mascot and pro rugby star Ilona Maher, who helps U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team player Sam Coffey with her footwork by the pool.
Thirty- and 15-second linear versions will run during both March Madness and U.S. Soccer broadcasts. A social series called “Hotel Highlights” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign and its featured athletes. Initial creative went live on March 1 around the SheBelieves Cup, with additional assets rolling out across Meta and TikTok from March 10.

A Podcast and a Loyalty Play
Marriott Bonvoy is also extending the campaign into podcasting. The chain has enlisted WNBA star Sophie Cunningham and sports journalist West Wilson — co-hosts of the existing “Show Me Something” program — to lead a four-episode limited series called “Live From the Bracket,” focused on college basketball culture and the experience of competing on the road. The series premieres March 24 and will be available across YouTube, Instagram, X, Facebook, Apple and Spotify.
The campaign is anchored around Marriott’s Bonvoy loyalty program, which is running its own March Madness-themed activation. Starting March 16, Bonvoy members can redeem a single loyalty point for rewards including a four-night hotel stay, suite tickets to the Women’s Final Four and access to a live taping of “Live From the Bracket.”
