Adobe Adds Hands-On Editing Controls to Its ChatGPT Plug-In

Must read

Users can select part of an image or open a PDF in a side panel, then refine it by hand without leaving the conversation.

Adobe has added interactive editing controls for images, designs and PDFs to its plug-in in ChatGPT, the company said Sept. 29. The update lets users move between typing instructions and making manual adjustments without leaving the chatbot.

The update was announced alongside OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 and began rolling out globally on ChatGPT’s web and app versions, Adobe said in a blog post.

Images and designs

In the new interactive editor, users can select an object or brush over an area of an image, then ask ChatGPT to use the plug-in to make a change. Controls for hue, saturation, contrast, brightness and other adjustments appear based on the type of edit requested. Asking to change the color of an object, for example, brings up color controls limited to that selection.

Edits remain in context as users move between the editor and the conversation, so they don’t need to re-explain their work or upload the file again, Adobe said. The image and design editors are powered by Photoshop and Adobe Express.

Adobe offered an example: A user photographing a latte on a coffee table for a social media post finds a stray napkin in the shot. The user brushes over the napkin and asks ChatGPT to remove it, then brushes over the cup and asks for a brightness and contrast adjustment. Sliders for both appear.

PDFs

Using Acrobat tools within the plug-in, users can open a PDF in a side panel, revise text or highlight passages directly, and send that document context back to ChatGPT to continue a task.

In one example, a user reviewing a freelance contract highlights a paragraph on payment terms and asks ChatGPT to identify other sections on payments or invoicing. The Acrobat highlight tool marks those passages so the user can check whether the terms are consistent.

“We want ChatGPT to help people go from an idea to work they’re ready to use or share, with control over the details along the way,” said Vibhor Chhabra, product lead for the ChatGPT ecosystem at OpenAI. “Adobe’s plug-in brings its creative expertise and precision into that experience, letting people move naturally between describing what they want and editing images, designs and PDFs themselves — all in ChatGPT.”

Background

Adobe introduced its plug-in in ChatGPT on Aug. 6, with more than 70 tools from Photoshop, Firefly, Acrobat, Adobe Express and other products. The company also offers a plug-in in Claude and Slack, and says it recently combined its creative and productivity tools into a single plug-in across the three platforms.
